Six Million Halal Meat Consumers in Britain
An article in that journal dealing with the decision by supermarket Tesco to launch a “halal barbeque range” to tap a “growing market” says “the UK barbecue market has an estimated annual worth of £2.8 billion, with a calculated 6 million consumers of halal meat in the UK.”
According to figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in 2009, the number of Muslims in Britain stood at 2.4 million, a growth of “only” 500,000 over a four year period. So it seems 3.6 million non-Muslim also use halal meats.
Tesco’s ethnic food buying manager Steve Ewels was quoted as saying that “We know from our own sales data that there is a high growing demand for halal food, so for us it is a natural move to offer a barbecue range.”Tesco said it currently offers 100 different fresh halal products, with volume sales growing at 82 percent year-on-year.
