Bribe for Halal certification in Indonesia

Indonesia’s highest Islamic authority stands accused of taking money in exchange for halal certification permits. Home to the world's largest Muslim population, certification guarantees Indonesia's food consumption is permissible, or halal, under Islamic law.

Majelis Ulamas Indonesia (MUI), which represents the country's Muslim groups, is allegedly profiting from permits that should be issued without charge. Multinational food and drink companies are required by law to have halal certificates in order to import products into Indonesia.

According to Tempo Magazine, MUI accepted money in the form of bribes from Australian certification companies. Mohamed El-Mouelhy, head of Sydney Halal Certification said his organization and six other Australian companies collectively paid MUI officials. MUI Chairman Amidhan Shaberah denied the bribery allegations Wednesday. He said certifications are free but companies are required to cover travel expenses for MUI auditors.
