An initiative of The Ansaar Project, the Halal Food Bank aims to provide halal, non-perishable foods to those struggling to make ends meet — Muslim or not — thanks to donations made by the Muslim community from local shopping centers and grocery stores.
“A number of welfare organizations are reliant on the food parcels we provide every month for the needy in our community,” said Ansaar Melbourne coordinator Raqeeba Hanif.
Established in Sydney and now with branches in Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane, HFB is run entirely by volunteers, including coordinators, donors, drivers and packing day attendants.
The Melbourne-based organization, open since 2011, provides packs on a monthly basis to six recipient organizations across the city who work with needy children and families, women experiencing domestic difficulty, men in crisis and refugee and asylum seekers who are new to the community.
“The project has been received with overwhelming appreciation from our recipient organizations and support from the community, with the service in very high demand,” said Ms Hanif.
